Arache
The design of this character was certainly a struggle, especially on the designs of his clothing and hair. After the design was finalized however, this painting wasn’t too difficult. Painting unusual skin tones is a fun exercise, playing with minute skin tones that necessarily have to be different to what we’re used to in tan skin and red blood. Here, however, I don’t think I pushed the skin tones quite as far as I could have. I decided to paint Telusce as well to experiment on pushing it further.
Telusce
Telusce actually didn’t give me that much difficulty in her design. I used a darker skin tone with more complex, rounder face tattoos, and a lighter hair color. The darker tone on the skin nudged me into making her more reflective, similar to what you would see in dark human skin tones. It was a good step to take, and made me push colors a little further than I usually do for skin tones. Overall I’m very happy with both of these pieces, in the designs of the character, the execution of color and value, and the way the backgrounds take the same vibe while also being thematically different to match the characters.
